His unbrushed coat is slate-grey
Speckled with paint brush strokes
Of black, brown, and tans
He smiles at me as only dog lovers notice
The grocery store parking lot is all but deserted
Only the bag boys about
Making noise as they collect the metal carts
His emaciated body begs for food
His tail wags as if he sees hope in me
I drive off
Leaving him in the grocery store parking lot
Alone
And I never forgive myself
