Spotlight: Robert McDermott

Hi All

It's a great day to shine the spotlight on an individual I find highly talented. It is with great pleasure - on the Jimmy Broccoli page and website (to be posted soon) - to share with you the poetry of Robert McDermott.

I've been reading Robert's poetry for a couple of years - and have been a fan of it since being first introduced to it. His verse is honest, often revealing, and is always interesting and a pleasure to read.

Robert in his own words:

I dabbled in poetry when I was much younger. Approximately 6 years ago, I began to approach it more seriously. Since then, I've been published in an anthology book, and online. I was a part-time professional photographer and an executive in the travel industry.

I would be remiss if didn't mention author/poet Anika Vaughn Raine for the unsurpassed mentoring skills she utilized in a free Facebook poetry program, one on one-5 years ago. The lessons were invaluable. Also, author/writer/poet Judge Santiago Burdon for his encouragement and support.

Here are two poems by Robert McDermott - and, I'm certain you'll love them as much as I do! ______________

'Ode to NYC'

I want to see the clash of the classes the dichotomy between the debutantes and the downtrodden

wallow in the welfare scream at those who don't care take the heat smell the urine in the street

soak up society revel in the rivalry step on the suited smile at the smart

vilify the antagonists snore at the soporifics bleed in the gutter be saved by another

turn off the lights smile at the night experience the extremes of a midnight's dream ______________

Survivor

I'm in the winter of my life

the window panes have shattered

glass remains unshattered

scars of life have softened

I no longer think of them as often
